KAWA AUTO App - Android

OTA Firmware Update Instructions

Key Principles

  • The OTA update consists of two stages: first connect to the internet to download the update package, and then connect to the dash cam's Wi-Fi to transfer the package to the device.
  • It is normal for your phone to temporarily lose internet access after connecting to the dash cam's Wi-Fi. Switch back to an internet-connected network when checking for and downloading firmware.
  • While the update package is being transferred, the dash cam will pause recording. Keep the device powered on, leave the App open, and keep the phone close to the device.

I. Scope and Preparation

Applicable Devices

These instructions apply to KAWA dash cams that have been added to or can connect to the KAWA AUTO App and support OTA firmware updates through the App. The model shown in the video is KAWA_D9. Screens for other models may vary slightly; refer to the actual App interface.

Device Power

Before updating, make sure the dash cam has a stable power supply. Do not perform the update while the vehicle is turned off, the voltage is unstable, or the vehicle is moving.

Phone Status

Make sure the phone has sufficient battery power. During the update, do not close the App or clear it from the background.

Network Requirements

Prepare two types of connection: an internet-connected network (mobile data/home Wi-Fi) and the dash cam's Wi-Fi hotspot (such as KAWA_D9_XXXX).

Time Required

Download and transfer times vary depending on the network and device model. Allow 5–10 minutes to complete the entire process.

II. OTA Update Process

Connect to the dash cam's Wi-Fi → Open KAWA AUTO → Go to My Device / Firmware Update → Disconnect from the dash cam's Wi-Fi and connect to the internet → Download the update package → Reconnect to the dash cam's Wi-Fi → Push the upgrade package → Wait for the transfer to finish and verify the firmware version

Note: An internet connection is required to check for and download firmware. A connection to the dash cam's Wi-Fi is required to transfer the update package. Switching networks twice is part of the normal process.

III. Detailed Instructions

Step 1: Connect to the Dash Cam's Wi-Fi

1. Open the WLAN / Wi-Fi settings on your phone.

2. Select the dash cam's hotspot. Its name usually includes KAWA or the device model, for example, KAWA_D9_XXXX.

3. After connecting, your phone may display “No internet access.” This is normal because the Wi-Fi connection is used for direct communication between the phone and the dash cam.

Tip: If the dash cam's Wi-Fi does not appear in the list, make sure the dash cam is powered on and its Wi-Fi function is enabled.

Step 2: Authorize the Initial Connection

4. Open the KAWA AUTO App, go to the device list, and select the relevant device.

5. If the App displays “Authorize connection,” follow the on-screen instructions to confirm authorization on the dash cam.

6. After authorization is complete, the App will open the live preview or device page.

Tip: Authorization is usually required for the first connection. Previously authorized devices generally do not require confirmation again.

Step 3: Open the Firmware Update Page

7. In the App, go to My Device.

8. Check the Device Name, Model No., MAC Address, and other device information to confirm that the correct device is connected.

9. Tap Firmware Update.

Tip: The firmware version shown in the video is 0.0.16 and is provided for reference only.

Step 4: Switch to an Internet-Connected Network to Check for Updates

10. If the App asks you to disconnect from the device and connect to the internet, tap I see.

11. Disconnect from the dash cam's hotspot in your phone's Wi-Fi settings, and then switch to an internet-connected Wi-Fi network or mobile data.

12. Return to the App and wait while it checks for a new firmware version.

Tip: This is a key part of the OTA process. The dash cam's hotspot does not provide internet access, so you must use an internet connection to check for a new version.

Step 5: Download the Update Package

13. If a new version is available, the page will display Latest Version, Date of Update, and Updated Contents.

14. When the message “New version of firmware detected, download it?” appears, tap OK.

15. Keep the phone connected to the internet and wait for the update package to finish downloading.

Tip: If no new version is detected, the current firmware may already be up to date. You can exit the update process.

Step 6: Confirm That the Update Package Is Ready to Transfer

16. When the download is complete, the page will display Firmware downloaded successfully.

17. The App will confirm that the update package has been detected and inform you that the dash cam will stop recording during the transfer.

18. After confirming that the device has a stable power supply, tap OK to continue.

Tip: During the transfer, do not turn off the vehicle, unplug the power cable, or force the dash cam to restart.

Step 7: Reconnect to the Dash Cam's Wi-Fi

19. The App will prompt you to ensure that the phone is stably connected to the dash cam's Wi-Fi.

20. Open the WLAN quick settings panel or system settings on your phone.

21. Select the dash cam's hotspot again, for example, KAWA_D9_XXXX, and then return to the App.

Tip: An internet connection is not required at this stage. You must connect to the dash cam's hotspot to transfer the update package to the device.

Step 8: Transfer the Update Package to the Dash Cam

22. After confirming that the phone is connected to the dash cam's Wi-Fi, tap Push the upgrade package.

23. When the Pushing page appears, wait for the progress bar to complete.

24. During the transfer, keep the App on the current screen. Do not exit the App, lock the phone, disconnect Wi-Fi, or switch networks.

Tip: The transfer stage may take some time, as shown in the video. This is normal; please wait patiently.

Step 9: Wait for the Transfer to Complete

25. When the page displays Pushing..., the update package is being sent to the dash cam.

26. The dash cam may stop recording or restart. Do not operate the device.

27. When the transfer is complete, the App will return to the device list or device page.

Tip: The transfer stage may take some time, as shown in the video. This is normal; please wait patiently.
